Me, I do not like the police!" She scowled at them, without camouflaging her dislike of the visit. "Always, if they can, they make me embarrassments."
"No, no, Madame, you must not say that," said Dessin, who was a tall thin melancholy-looking man. "When have I ever caused you embarrassments?"
"Over that little fool who drank the carbolic acid," said Madame Joliet promptly. "And all because she has fallen in love with the chef d’orchestre - who does not care for women and has other tastes. Over that you made the big brouhaha! Which is not good for my beautiful Ballet."

On the contrary, big box-office business," said Dessin. "And that was three years ago. You should not bear malice. Now about this girl, Anna Stravinska."
"Well, what about her?" said Madame cautiously.
"Is she Russian?" asked Inspector Craddock.
"No, indeed. You mean, because of her name? But they all call themselves names like that, these girls. She was not important, she did not dance well, she was not particularly good-looking. Elle etait assez bien, c’est tout. She danced well enough for the corps de ballet – but no solos."

Biff on the head, strangled, now a knife.Versatile devil-what?Here arethe medical details if you care to see'em." He shoved a paper towards Poirot."A B C down on the floor between thedead man's feet,"he added. "Has the dead man been identified?asked Poirot. "Yes.A B C's slipped up for once-if that's any satisfaction to us. Deceased's a man called Earlsfield-George Earlsfield.Barber byprofession." "Curious,"commented Poirot. "May have skipped a letter,"suggested the colonel. My friend shook his head doubtfully. "Shall we have in the next witness?"asked Crome."He's anxious to gethome."

"Yes,yes-let's get on." A middle-aged gentleman strongly resembling the frog footman in Alice inWonderland was led in.He was highly excited and his voice was shrill withemotion. "Most shocking experience I have ever known,"he squeaked."I have a weakheart,sir-a very weak heart,it might have been the death of me." "Your name, please,"said the inspector. "Downes.Roger Emmanuel Downes." "Profession?" "I am a master at Highfield School for boys." "Now,Mr Downes, will you tell us in your own words what happened." "I can tell you that very shortly, gentlemen.

"Cheltenham." "Doncaster.I know,my girl! After all,I picked up his ticket, didn't I?" "Well,he told me he was going to Cheltenham. I'm sure he did." "Oh,you've got it wrong. He was going to Doncaster all right. Some peoplehave all the luck.I've got a bit on Firefly for the Leger and I'd love tosee it run." "I shouldn't think Mr Cust went to race-meetings,he doesn't look thekind.Oh,Tom,I hope he won't get murdered. It's Doncaster the A B C murder'sgoing to be." "Cust'll be all right. His name doesn't begin with a D." "He might have been murdered last time.He was down near Churston atTorquay when the last murder happened." "Was he?That's a bit of a coincidence, isn't it?" He laughed. "He wasn't at Bexhill the time before, was he?"

"He was away......Yes,I remember he was away......because he forgot hisbathing-dress.Mother was mending it for him.And she said:"There-Mr Cust wentaway yesterday without his bathing-dress after all,"and I said:"Oh,nevermind the old bathing-dress-there's been the most awful murder,"I said,"agirl strangled at Bexhill." "Well,if he wanted his bathing-dress,he must have been going to theseaside.I say,Lily'-his face crinkled up with amusement."What price yourold dugout being the murderer himself?" "Poor Mr Cust?He wouldn't hurt a fly,"laughed Lily. They danced on happily-in their conscious minds nothing but the pleasureof being together. In their unconscious minds something stirred......

"Oh, good sir, peradventure you mean the ragged regal vagrant that tarried here the night. If such as you take interest in such as he, know, then, that I have sent him of an errand. He will be back anon."
"How soon? How soon? Come, waste not the time-cannot I overtake him? How soon will he be back?"
"Thou needst not stir; he will return quickly."
Abstract Painting
"So be it then. I will try to wait. But stop!-you sent him of an errand?-you! Verily, this is a lie-he would not go. He would pull thy old beard, an thou didst offer him such an insolence. Thou hast lied, friend; thou hast surely lied! He would not go for thee nor for any man."
"For any man-no; haply not. But I am not a man."
"What! Now o' God's name what art thou, then?"
"It is a secret-mark thou reveal it not. I am an archangel!"

group of people, all talking and laughing together; were advancing, from within the wooden barrier, toward the turnstile.
Mrs. Bunting stared at them nervously. She wondered which of them was the gentleman with whom Mr. Hopkins had hoped she would never be brought into personal contact; she thought she could pick him out among the others. He was a tall, powerful, handsome gentleman, with a military appearance.
Abstract Painting
Just now he was smiling down into the face of a young lady. "Monsieur Barberoux is quite right," he was saying in a loud, cheerful voice, "our English law is too kind to the criminal, especially to the murderer. If we conducted our trials in the French fashion, the place we have just left would be very much fuller than it is to-day. A man of whose guilt we are absolutely assured is oftener than not acquitted, and then the public taunt us with 'another undiscovered crime!"

"Well," said Bunting, "as you do know, I may as well tell you. The Avenger's moving West - that's what he's doing. Last time 'twas King's Cross - now 'tis the Edgware Road. I said he'd come our way, and he has come our way!"
"You just go and get me that paper," she commanded. "I wants to see for myself."
Abstract Painting
Bunting went into the next room; then he came back and handed her silently the odd-looking, thin little sheet.
"Why, whatever's this?" she asked. "This ain't our paper!"
"'Course not," he answered, a trifle crossly. "It's a special early edition of the Sun, just because of The Avenger. Here's the bit about it" - he showed her the exact spot. But she would have found it, even by the comparatively bad light of the gas-jet now flaring over the dressing-table, for the news was printed in large, clear characters

Abstract Painting
A hot wave of unease almost of remorse, swept over Bunting. Ellen would never have spent that penny on herself - he knew that well enough - and if it hadn't been so cold, so foggy, so - so drizzly, he would have gone out again through the gate and stood under the street lamp to take his pleasure. He dreaded with a nervous dread the glance of Ellen's cold, reproving light-blue eye. That glance would tell him that he had had no business to waste a penny on a paper, and that well he knew it!
Abstract Painting
Suddenly the door in front of him opened, and he beard a familiar voice saying crossly, yet anxiously, "What on earth are you doing out there, Bunting? Come in - do! You'll catch your death of cold! I don't want to have you ill on my hands as well as everything else!" Mrs. Bunting rarely uttered so many words at once nowadays.
He walked in through the front door of his cheerless house. "I went out to get a paper," he said sullenly.

"I placed Daddy Jacques against the wall, ordering him not to stir from the spot, while I, taking advantage of a moment when the moon was hidden by a cloud, moved to the front of the window, out of the patch of light which came from it, ?for the window was half-open!
Abstract Painting
If I could only know what was passing in that silent chamber! I returned to Daddy Jacques and whispered the word 'ladder' in his ear. At first I had thought of the tree which, a week ago, served me for an observatory; but I immediately saw that, from the way the window was half-opened, I should not be able to see from that point of view anything that was passing in the room; and I wanted, not only to see, but to hear, and ?to act. "Don't listen to me, good man! All the wonderful things I have said are not true at all. I know Pinocchio well and he is indeed a very wicked fellow, lazy and disobedient, who instead of going to school, runs away with his playmates to have a good time."
At this speech, his nose returned to its natural size.
"Why are you so pale?" the old man asked suddenly.
Abstract Painting
"Why are you so pale?" the old man asked suddenly.
"Let me tell you. Without knowing it, I rubbed myself against a newly painted wall," he lied, ashamed to say that he had been made ready for the frying pan.
"What have you done with your coat and your hat and your breeches?"
"I met thieves and they robbed me. Tell me, my good man, have you not, perhaps, a little suit to give me, so that I may go home?"

looked like horrid heads of hair, mingled with quaint reptiles such as the ancient sculptors have made on the head of Medusa. This place, which Mademoiselle found cheerful and in which she lived in the summer season, appeared to us as sad and funereal now. The soil was black and muddy from the recent rains and the rotting of the fallen leaves; the trunks of the trees were black and the sky above us was now, as if in mourning, charged with great, heavy clouds.
Abstract Painting
And it was in this sombre and desolate retreat that we saw the white walls of the pavilion as we approached. A queer-looking building without a window visible on the side by which we neared it. A little door alone marked the entrance to it. It might have passed for a tomb, a vast mausoleum in the midst of a thick forest. As we came nearer, we were able to make out its disposition. The building obtained all the light it needed from the south, that is to say, from the open country. The little door closed on the park. Monsieur and Mademoiselle Stangerson must have found it an ideal seclusion for their work and their dreams.

Abstract Painting
