只这两段话，赵刚就知道袁保龄绝非无能之辈。对各港特点能够张口就来，显然是曾经亲自细查过，这在清朝可以说是十分难得。
但是赵刚更关心的是船坞，在近代中国，因为船坞的问题导致无法制造大型船舶，而历史上旅顺船坞专门为“定远”这样的7000吨巨舰设计，不知道现在如何了。
“袁大人，旅顺果真天险，不知道港内船坞有多大？可容多重之船？”
这番话确有考绩之意了，袁保龄沉思半响，一一作答：
“旅顺口内计有东西两澳，自新修大坝以东，南尽黄金山麓，北接天后宫前，东逾老水师营废船坞为东澳。长约四百公尺，宽约二百七十公尺，水深三十六至四十二公尺。”
“自白玉山前延西绕折而南直抵鸡冠山北者为西澳，其面积较诸东澳约宽三倍。惟水位较浅，最多不过三十公尺，无法容纳大型军舰。”

To these high flown expressions, Elizabeth listened with all the insensibility of distrust; and though the suddenness of their removal surprised her, she saw nothing in it really to lament; it was not to be supposed that their absence from Netherfield would prevent Mr. Bingley's being there; and as to the loss of their society, she was persuaded that Jane must soon cease to regard it, in the enjoyment of his. ¡¡¡¡"It is unlucky," said she, after a short pause, "that you should not be able to see your friends before they leave the country.
